Practise Your Algebra

Don't hurt my puppy!!!`

Just a reminder for you all that the make up quiz for Algebra will be on Monday. Remember the trick I taught you:

Isolate the variable (puppy)

“How?” you ask. Get it all by itself on one side of the equation (teeter totter).

“How do you do that?” Move all other parts of the equation to the other side. Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do it to the other side or else it will be unbalanced (no longer equal). (What happens when a teeter totter is unbalanced? Someone gets hurt! Poor puppy!)

“How?” By using the inverse operation, of course!!

“What if it is subtracting or dividing by a variable?” Just switch the variable (puppy) with the answer to the equation. You don’t even have to change the operation at all. Simply solve the equation and you have found the variable.

You want some examples? Alright. Here we go.

        a + 8 = 42 (Hint: Get rid of the + 8 by subtracting 8)

So… a = 42 – 8 (Hint: Whatever you do to one side of the equation, do to the other or else you will be unbalanced. Poor puppy!)

Now…a = 34 (Good job!)

Proof…  a + 8 = 42 (Substitute in the value for a.)

            34 + 8 = 42 (Yay! It worked.)

Here’s another using the exception to the rule.

68 ÷ p = 4 (Switch the variable with the quotient.)

68 ÷ 4 = p (That was easy, now just solve it.)

17 = p (And, prove it.)

68 ÷ p = 4 (Substitute the value for p.)

68 ÷ 17 = 4 (So smart!!!)

Students Promoting Books

After spending the last month in Book Clubs, the groups really wanted to persuade others to read the books they enjoyed. Watch the following videos and maybe you will pick up one of their favourite new books.

Math Homework

This weekend you have some homework in Math. The lesson we worked on today was volume of rectangular prisms. Questions 1 through 8 were assigned for homework – unless you finished them in class.

Who remembers the formula for finding volume of rectangular prisms?

Think about what we discussed in class: when they give the area of the base of the prism, they have actually given you the product of two of the dimensions – length and width.

Would you like some practice? Try this. How about a challenge? Try this.

Social Studies

As part of our Social Studies curriculum, we are currently researching Canada’s early European explorers. Although the bulk of the work will be done in class, some of the research may be completed at home. The following websites should help you to find the necessary information. It is most important to look for information about the explorers contact with the First Nations’ people. You may not find facts specific to your explorer, so general information will be accepted.

Contact and Conquests   Explorers of Canada    Contact Trade and Alliances   Champlain and Cartier

Early Explorers of Canada   Canada’s First Explorers   Explorer’s Index - Passageways   Hudson   Cartier   Cabot   Champlain

Frobisher   Henry Hudson     John Davis     John Davis 2     Martin Frobisher     Henry Hudson 2

John Davis 3     John Davis 4     John Cabot

Practice Finding Surface Area and Volume

Here is a link to a great activity to practise finding the volume and surface area of rectangular and triangular prisms. Unfortunately, they also add cylinders into the practice. I suggest you skip those. Post a comment letting us know how it went.

Electronics are allowed on Friday – this week only.

Students in 6G have been given permission by me, Mrs. Guignard, to bring in a personal electronic device tomorrow (Friday, March 9th). The school will not be responsible for any damage, but I will keep them all locked up safe and sound in the classroom. The students will drop them off with me in the morning, will be given access to them at the appropriate time, and then returned at the end of the day on their way to the busses.

Problem of the Day

You will work with a partner to solve today’s math question. Please use the comment section to answer the Problem of the Day. Remember to show your work and explain your thinking.

Today’s problem is:

According to Wikipedia, hair grows at a rate of 15 cm per year. If you had never cut your hair, how long would it be now.

March is Math Month

To kick off Math Month, 6G and Mrs. Draca’s Kindergarten class spent the morning being Math Buddies. Look at how much fun learning math can be.
